Dublin Taxi Fare FAQ

How much is a taxi fare in Dublin?

A Dublin taxi fare starts at €4.40 (Standard Rate, Mon–Sat 8am–8pm), then €1.32 per kilometre or €0.47 per minute. A typical 5km city centre journey costs €12–€15, and a taxi from Dublin Airport to the city centre costs €25–€35 during the day. At night (8pm–8am), Sundays, and public holidays, the Premium Rate of €5.40 applies, then €1.81/km or €0.64/min. There's no surge pricing — all licensed taxis use regulated taximeter rates set by the National Transport Authority.

Is a taxi or Uber cheaper in Dublin?

In Dublin, taxis and Uber are essentially the same price. Uber Ireland only operates as UberTaxi — a service that connects you with licensed SPSV drivers who must follow Ireland's regulated tariffs. There is no UberX or UberPool here. Whether you book through Uber, FreeNow, Bolt, or CaminoCabs, the metered fare is the same. The differences come from booking fees (typically €3 added by booking apps). At a taxi rank, there's no booking fee at all.

How much should a 30 minute taxi cost in Dublin?

A 30-minute taxi journey in Dublin typically costs €18–€25 during the day (Standard Rate, Mon–Sat 8am–8pm), depending on the distance covered. The taximeter calculates by distance (€1.32/km) or by time (€0.47/min) — whichever is higher at any moment. In heavy traffic the time-based rate often applies. At night or on Sundays, the same trip costs €25–€35 due to the Premium Rate.

How much is a taxi from Dublin Airport to city centre?

A taxi from Dublin Airport (Terminal 1 or Terminal 2) to Dublin city centre typically costs €25–€35 during the day and €32–€45 at night. The journey is about 12 kilometres and takes 20–35 minutes depending on traffic. Fares follow regulated national tariffs — no surge pricing. Pre-book your Dublin Airport taxi for a guaranteed pickup with a fare estimate upfront.

Is there surge pricing for taxis in Dublin?

No. Taxi fares in Ireland are regulated by the National Transport Authority. The fare is determined by the taximeter based on distance and time. Tariffs change between Standard Rate (day), Premium Rate (night/Sunday), and Special Rate (late-night weekends and specific holidays), but there's no demand-based pricing. Whether it's New Year's Eve or a quiet Tuesday morning, you pay the same regulated rate.

What are the different taxi tariffs in Ireland?

There are three rates set by the National Transport Authority:

Standard Rate (Tariff 1): Mon–Sat 8am–8pm. Initial charge €4.40, then €1.32/km or €0.47/min.

Premium Rate (Tariff 2): Nights, Sundays, and most public holidays. Initial charge €5.40, then €1.81/km or €0.64/min.

Special Rate (Tariff 3): Late-night weekends (midnight–4am Sat & Sun) and specific holidays. Initial charge €5.40, then €2.20/km or €0.78/min.

When did Dublin taxi rates last change?

Ireland's National Transport Authority last revised the national taxi tariffs in December 2024, and these rates remain in effect today. The previous Standard Rate initial charge of €3.80 was increased to €4.40, and the Premium Rate initial charge went from €4.20 to €5.40. Many third-party fare calculators online still show the old pre-2024 rates — CaminoCabs always uses the current official tariffs.

Are there any extra charges on top of the meter?

A few legitimate extras may apply:

Booking fee: €3 when you pre-book through an app or by phone. There's no booking fee at a taxi rank.

Extra passenger fee: €1 for each additional adult after the first.

Soiling charge: Up to €140 if a passenger damages the vehicle.

There are no other legitimate extras. Tipping isn't required but is appreciated for good service.

Can I pre-book a taxi in Dublin?

Yes. Use the CaminoCabs booking page to pre-book a taxi for a specific date and time, or download the CaminoCabs app for instant booking with fare estimates. Pre-booking is ideal for early morning flights, business meetings, and events. A €3 booking fee applies for pre-booked trips.
