Who Takes This Route?
Maynooth is a town of two halves, with Maynooth University at one end of the main street and Maynooth Castle and Carton House at the other. Most airport bookings are tied to one of those.
Maynooth University staff, students and visitors. The university has a North Campus and a South Campus, and its own guidance says the South Campus is about five minutes on foot from Maynooth train station and about ten minutes from the North Campus. Students arriving with heavy luggage, visiting academics and conference delegates are the typical passengers. If you are going to a particular building, give the driver the campus name when you book.
Carton House guests. Carton House is now a hotel and spa on the former estate of the Earls and Dukes of Leinster, at the end of the town. Guests arriving for a stay, a round of golf or an event can be driven to the hotel without going near the city centre.
Heritage visitors. Maynooth Castle is run by the OPW through Heritage Ireland and stands in the centre of the town (Eircode W23 F2D5). It is close to everything else in the centre, so day visitors tend to be dropped in the middle of town and walk.
Commuters and returning residents. Maynooth is on a commuter rail line to Dublin Connolly, so residents have a rail link into Dublin for everyday travel. The airport leg is different, because the train does not go there, and a taxi covers it when you have luggage or an early flight.
Fare Breakdown by Tariff
| Tariff | When | Estimated Fare |
|---|---|---|
| Standard (1) | Mon–Sat, 8am–8pm | €52 – €63 |
| Premium (2) | Mon–Sat 8pm–8am, Sundays | €68 – €83 |
| Special (3) | Fri/Sat midnight–4am, Christmas, NYE | €75 – €91 |
The range reflects about 32 km of driving and roughly half an hour at free-flow speeds. A €3 booking fee applies when pre-booked. €1 per extra adult after the first. No luggage charge. If the driver takes the M50 past the West-Link toll point, the toll is added to the fare under NTA rules. For a precise estimate, use the fare calculator.
Travelling as a group or with lots of luggage? Book a 7 or 8 seater taxi: same regulated meter, room for up to 8 passengers.
Bringing a child who uses a car seat? CaminoCabs does not provide child seats, so bring your own. The child seat guide has the details.
The Route: Roads, Traffic and Tolls
There are three driving routes from the airport to Maynooth, all of them west across the north of the city. The figures below are for a weekday.
| Route | Distance | No traffic | Weekday 11:00 | Weekday 17:30 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| M50 | 31.7 km | 31 min | 33 min | 46 min |
| M50 and M4 | 34.4 km | 31 min | 33 min | 48 min |
| R157 (avoids the M50) | 33.8 km | 36 min | 38 min | 48 min |
All three routes are close to each other in time at 17:30, which is why the page quotes 30 to 50 minutes. The M50 routes are quickest in free-flow and at 11:00. The R157 is five minutes slower in free-flow traffic but matches the M4 variant at 17:30, so it is a realistic fallback if the M50 is congested. Plan on about 15 extra minutes if you are travelling in the evening peak.
M50 toll
The M50 is barrier-free. The toll point is on the West-Link bridge between Junction 6 (Blanchardstown, N3) and Junction 7 (Lucan, N4). The 2026 car rates published by eFlow are €2.60 with a tag, €3.20 with a video account and €3.80 unregistered. Whether you pay it depends on which route the driver takes, and the R157 route avoids the M50 altogether. Where the toll is paid, it is added to your metered fare.
M4 toll
Transport Infrastructure Ireland lists the M4 toll as applying to the Kilcock to Kinnegad stretch, which is west of Maynooth. A trip that ends in Maynooth does not use it.
All Transport Options Compared
| Option | Price | Time | Notes | Door-to-Door? |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Taxi (CaminoCabs) | €52 – €63 | 30 – 50 min | Per car, up to 4 passengers (more with a 7/8 seater) | Yes |
| Aircoach 700 + train from Drumcondra | €6 single for the coach, plus a rail fare | About 20 min on the coach, then the train | Aircoach stop outside Drumcondra station; trains to Maynooth on the Sligo line | No |
Aircoach to Drumcondra, then the train
Irish Rail promotes a connection that links Dublin Airport and the Maynooth line. Aircoach routes 700 and 700X stop directly outside Drumcondra station on Drumcondra Road Lower, and the coach ride takes around 20 minutes. Irish Rail sells the coach leg as an add-on to your train ticket at €6 single or €8 return, booked on irishrail.ie. You then take a train from Drumcondra towards Maynooth. Drumcondra is on the same line that serves Broombridge, Castleknock, Clonsilla, Leixlip and Maynooth.
Irish Rail says you must show a printed booking confirmation including the add-on to the coach driver, and the Aircoach ticket is valid for 24 hours on the selected date. Check the train times on irishrail.ie before you commit, because the wait at Drumcondra is part of your journey.
Is there a direct bus?
There used to be one. The Airport Hopper Maynooth to Dublin Airport service stopped on 10 February 2025, and RTÉ reported that the National Transport Authority would consider a subsidised public service route to replace it. We could not confirm a current direct service, so use the Transport for Ireland journey planner for the latest. For most travellers, the coach-and-train option or a taxi is what remains.
When each option makes sense
- Aircoach and train: one traveller with a small bag, arriving in daytime, who is comfortable timing a connection.
- Taxi: two or more people, anyone with luggage, an arrival late in the evening, or anywhere beyond the station such as Carton House, a campus building or a house on the edge of town.
Splitting the Fare
Everyone in the car shares one meter. This table assumes the Standard rate with €1 added per extra adult, before the booking fee and any toll.
| Passengers | Total fare (est.) | Per person |
|---|---|---|
| 1 person | €52 – €63 | €52 – €63 |
| 2 people | €53 – €64 | €26.50 – €32 |
| 3 people | €54 – €65 | €18 – €21.67 |
| 4 people | €55 – €66 | €13.75 – €16.50 |
Four people in one taxi pay roughly €14 to €17 each. That is in the same bracket as the Aircoach leg and a rail fare for one traveller, and it removes the connection. For five to eight people, a 7 or 8 seater keeps everyone in one vehicle.
Pickup and Drop-off in Maynooth
- Maynooth railway station, Eircode W23 N2F8. Its car park has 222 spaces and is run by APCOA.
- Maynooth University, North Campus or South Campus. Name the campus in your booking.
- Maynooth Castle, in the town centre, W23 F2D5.
- Carton House, the hotel and spa at the opposite end of the main street from the castle.
If you are staying in a house or apartment, share the Eircode so that the driver goes to the right door.
The Return Trip: Maynooth to Dublin Airport
Heading back to the airport costs the same range as the trip out. The drive is roughly half an hour without traffic, and about 46 to 48 minutes at 17:30 on a weekday, so work back from your check-in time rather than your departure time. For a morning flight, pre-book the night before. The route is a straight run east on the M50 or the R157, and if the driver is not using the M50, there is no toll to add.
Add your flight number to the booking if you are being collected. See the Dublin Airport taxi page for how pickup at Terminals 1 and 2 works.
