Who Takes This Route?

Kildare town sits about 66 km from the airport, so this is a long transfer, and the people who book it usually have a fixed destination in mind. Several of them are visiting the same few places.

Kildare Village shoppers. The outlet is on Nurney Road in Kildare Town (Eircode R51 R265). Its own site describes free parking and a drive of about 60 minutes from central Dublin. Visitors who land in the morning often go straight there before checking in anywhere else, and a taxi lets them leave bags in the boot while they shop.

Racing and breeding visitors. The Curragh Racecourse, home of Irish flat racing and its five Classics, is just outside the town. The Irish National Stud and Gardens (Tully, Co. Kildare, R51 KX25) is a thoroughbred breeding centre with Japanese Gardens, and the Curragh Racecourse site lists it among the main things to see around Kildare. Race-day and stud visitors tend to travel in groups, which suits a shared taxi.

Town and heritage visitors. Kildare is a cathedral town with St Brigid's Cathedral and a round tower, according to the Curragh Racecourse visitor guide. Passengers staying in or around the town, and families collecting relatives who have flown in, make up most of the other bookings.

There is a direct coach from the airport (covered below). A taxi makes sense when you are travelling as a group, carrying luggage, arriving at an awkward time, or going somewhere the coach does not stop, such as a farm gate, a house on the Curragh side of town, or the Village car park.

The Route: Roads, Traffic and Tolls

There are three driving options from Dublin Airport to Kildare Town, and the choice changes with the time of day. These figures are for a weekday departure.

Every route ends on the M7 heading south-west and leaves it for Kildare Town. The difference is how you get from the airport to the start of the N7 and the M7. The slowdown comes before you reach the motorway: a 17:30 departure added roughly 16 to 19 minutes to each option in the figures above. That is why the page quotes 50 to 75 minutes rather than a single figure. Outside the evening rush the drive is close to an hour.

If you are heading for the Curragh or the National Stud rather than the town centre, give the driver the exact address when you book so the destination is right.

All Transport Options Compared

Dublin Coach 726: the direct public option

Dublin Coach route 726, the N7 Service, runs between Dublin Airport and Portlaoise via Red Cow Luas, Naas, Newbridge and Kildare. The timetable shows a departure from the airport at half past every hour, day and night, and a journey to Kildare of about 1 hour 25 minutes. The adult fare from 11 May 2026 is €13 single or €23 return. The Kildare stop is Market Square, in the town centre, and the Curragh Racecourse is a later stop on the same route.

For one person travelling light, this is the sensible choice. The coach is 24 hours, so a late landing is not a problem, and the single fare is a small fraction of the taxi. Allow time at the airport to find the stop, and check the current timetable on dublincoach.ie before you travel, because service times change.

Train via Heuston

Kildare has a mainline station with frequent trains from Dublin Heuston. Kildare Village says the journey from Heuston takes 35 minutes with services every half hour. The difficulty is the first half of the trip: there is no rail line to the airport, so you have to get to Heuston first. Once you add the transfer, the train is rarely quicker than the 726.

The train does work well for the return leg if your flight is late in the day and you are not carrying much. Kildare Village also operates a complimentary shuttle between Kildare train station and the Village, so check its website for the current timetable.

When a taxi is the better choice

• Three or four people sharing: the taxi works out at roughly €28 to €45 per person, door to door, compared with €13 each on the coach plus a final leg to wherever you are staying.
• A large amount of luggage, golf bags or sports equipment.
• A destination away from Market Square, such as a house on the Curragh side or a farm.
• A time-critical journey where one change of vehicle is a risk.

Splitting the Fare

The metered fare is per vehicle, so the cost per head falls as the group grows. The table uses the Standard rate and adds €1 for each extra adult. It excludes the €3 booking fee and any toll.

For a group of five to eight, book a 7 or 8 seater. The meter is the same, plus €1 for each extra adult, so the cost per head keeps falling as the group grows.

Pickup and Drop-off in Kildare

Name the exact place when you book, and the driver will go there. These are the places most trips use, all verified on their own sites:

• Kildare Village, Nurney Road, Kildare Town, R51 R265. The car park is free, according to the Village.
• Market Square, Kildare, the town-centre stop used by Dublin Coach 726.
• Irish National Stud and Gardens, Tully, R51 KX25.
• The Curragh Racecourse, also a stop on the 726 route.

If you are going to a race meeting or a stud tour, agree a collection time for the return when you book.

The Return Trip: Kildare to Dublin Airport

The fare in the opposite direction is the same range. Because the drive is long and the evening journey can reach about 77 minutes on the slowest option, plan the pickup backwards from your check-in time. A useful rule is to take the drive time at the busiest point of your travel day, add the time you want at the airport, and book the pickup for slightly earlier still. For an early flight, pre-book the night before. Taxis run around the clock, and a pre-booked car has a confirmed driver.
