Hotel guests. The Grand Hotel Malahide overlooks the coast and, according to its own website, is a short walk from Malahide DART station and close to Malahide Castle and the harbour.

Castle visitors. Malahide Castle and Gardens is in Malahide Demesne. The castle site describes guided castle tours, botanic gardens, a walled garden and Victorian conservatory, an exotic Butterfly House, a fairy trail for families and an Avoca shop and cafe. It says the Talbot family lived there for over 800 years and recommends allowing at least two hours.

Residents and commuters. Malahide station is a DART terminus and also has Northern Commuter services on the Dublin to Belfast line. The rail line does not reach the airport terminal, so residents landing with luggage need a road transfer.

The three options take the same time at 11am. At 5.30pm the R107 is the fastest by a minute and Baskin Lane the slowest, so the choice only matters at the evening peak. Tolls: none. All three roads are untolled and the M50 is not part of the trip, so your fare is the meter plus the booking fee.

No train runs to Dublin Airport, so the rail line only helps once you are in the city or at Sutton. From the airport itself, the bus is the only public option for Malahide: the Malahide Castle website lists route 102 as a direct airport-to-village service, and the Grand Hotel's site says the 102 stops near its Tennis Club. The route details come from Transport for Ireland and the two venues' own websites. Timetables change, so look up your day before you rely on a bus.

Choose the bus for a daytime landing with a small bag. Choose the taxi for a late landing, heavy cases, a group or a hotel drop. Once you are settled, Malahide station and buses 32 and 42 are the easier way into Dublin.
