Lost Something in
a Dublin Taxi?

Updated August 2026 · 6 min read

Phones, wallets, keys, laptops, shopping bags — every day passengers leave something behind in a Dublin taxi, and most of it does get recovered. The difference between getting your item back and never seeing it again is usually the first hour. Here's the exact process for each situation, straight from the official channels.

What to Do in the First Hour

Speed matters more than anything else. Grab these four facts while they're fresh:

1. The receipt. Taxi drivers are legally obliged to offer a printed receipt at the end of every journey — it shows the taxi licence number, registration, date, times and fare. Why you should always ask for a receipt.

2. Times and route. The exact pickup and drop-off times and both addresses.

3. How you booked. App, taxi rank, or street hail — each has a different recovery path below.

4. What the item looks like. A clear description helps when someone else hands it in for you.

The sooner you identify the driver, the more likely your item is still in the car.

Booked Through an App? (Uber, Bolt, FreeNow, Lynk)

If you booked through a ride-hailing or taxi app, your trip history is your lifeline. Every app keeps a record of the journey with the date, time, route, fare and driver details. Open the app, find the trip, and use the in-app support or "lost item" flow — most apps let you message or call the driver directly through the app.

If you can't reach the driver, contact the app's support team with the trip reference — they can contact the driver on your behalf. Screenshot the trip details before doing anything else, so you keep the record even if the ride disappears from the recent list.

Booked With CaminoCabs?

Every CaminoCabs journey is logged with its driver. If you've left something in the car, open the app and the 24/7 AI assistant will pull up your trip, provide the driver's details, and contact the driver to locate your item as soon as possible — day or night.

Hailed a Taxi at a Rank or on the Street?

This is where the receipt becomes everything. The printed receipt shows the taxi licence number and registration — check they match the roof sign and the plates before you walk away. With the licence number you can look up the driver or company through the official TFI licence checker.

No receipt? Note the vehicle type, colour and anything on the roof sign. Even partial details help the Gardaí trace the driver.

No Receipt? No Driver Details?

All is not lost. An Garda Síochána is responsible for lost property handed in by taxi drivers — drivers drop found items at their nearest Garda station. In Dublin, taxi services hand items into these designated stations:

Store Street (01) 6668000 · Kevin Street (01) 6669400 · Finglas (01) 6667500 · Shankill (01) 6665900 · Tallaght (01) 6666000

Call the stations nearest your journey with your ID and every detail you have. Gardaí hold found property for 31 to 366 days, and if it hasn't been handed in yet, check again a week later — drivers often drop items in late. Full station directory: garda.ie.

The Garda Carriage Office at Dublin Castle is the unit that licences SPSV drivers — for lost property, the designated stations above are where items are handed in. Communities help too: Irish Taxi Lost And Found and Lost and Found - Dublin on Facebook, plus lost.ie, list items found around the city.

Important: Taxis vs Buses and Trains

This is the mix-up that wastes the most time. The TFI Lost Property service handles Dublin Bus, Go-Ahead, Luas and Irish Rail — not taxis. If you left something on a bus, tram or train, use the TFI lost property form or call 0818 294 015.

Taxi lost property is different: it's handled by An Garda Síochána. Filing a TFI report won't find a taxi item, and ringing Gardaí won't find a bus item. Match the channel to the vehicle.

What NOT to Do

Don't wait days. The faster you act, the higher the chance the item is still with the driver.

Don't report without the basics. Gardaí can't trace "a taxi on Saturday night" — bring the licence number, times, route or at least the vehicle details.

Don't pay anyone a "reward" before verifying. Only collect in person and check the item is genuinely yours before paying anything.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there a Dublin taxi lost and found?

There's no single central lost-and-found office for Dublin taxis — An Garda Síochána is responsible for property handed in by taxi drivers. Drivers drop items at their nearest Garda station; in Dublin the designated stations are Store Street, Kevin Street, Finglas, Shankill and Tallaght, and items are held for 31 to 366 days.

What do I do if I left something in a taxi in Dublin?

Act fast: note the receipt details, times and route. If you booked through an app, use the trip history and in-app support to reach the driver. If you hailed a taxi at a rank or on the street, contact the designated Garda stations nearest your journey — and check again a week later.

How do I contact the taxi carriage office in Dublin?

The Garda Carriage Office at Dublin Castle licences SPSV drivers, but lost property handed in by drivers goes to Garda stations, not the Carriage Office. For lost items, contact the designated Dublin stations (Store Street, Kevin Street, Finglas, Shankill, Tallaght) or use the Garda station directory on garda.ie for contact details.

What happens to lost property found in taxis?

Drivers hand found items to their nearest Garda station. Gardaí hold property for a minimum of 31 days up to 366 days depending on its nature or value, to let the owner reclaim it — and you'll need proof of identity to collect anything.

Yes — your trip history contains the driver's details, and most apps let you contact the driver or support directly. On CaminoCabs, the 24/7 AI assistant pulls up your trip and contacts the driver for you.

Do taxi drivers have to give you a receipt?

Yes — taxi drivers are legally obliged to offer a printed receipt at the end of every journey. It shows the licence number, registration, times, distance and fare. Keep it until you're sure you haven't left anything behind.
